A new cholesterol drugmaker is hoping to raise its price on Crestor by 10 percent, or $6.50, from $3.75. The price change comes after two other companies, AstraZeneca and Aurobindo Pharma, were accused of failing to provide accurate and up-to-date cholesterol warnings on the drug.
The price increase came after Aurobindo and Bristol-Myers Squibb, which have filed a for a 10-percent price increase, said in a statement that they “are committed to a resolution that meets our highest standard of patient safety.”
Both drugs were approved in Europe in 2003 and have been on the market since then, but the price increase for Crestor is expected to reach $4.50 in May this year.
The manufacturer, which is based in Basel, Switzerland, is also raising the price of Crestor by 10 percent, after two other companies are also said to be in the process.
The news is good news for the cholesterol-lowering drug maker, which is facing pressure from the federal government to pay more than its share of the $6.4 billion it spent on Crestor last year to promote treatment.
Crestor is among the best known medicines for preventing blood clots in adults, which is the primary treatment of coronary artery disease. It works by blocking the action of enzymes in the body that cause the formation of cholesterol. The cost for Crestor will be the same as for Lipitor, but AstraZeneca is planning to sell the generic to its customers in the first quarter of the year.
Aurobindo and Bristol-Myers Squibb both said they would continue to work to develop the drug, but they said they were still waiting for final approval.
AstraZeneca, which is based in Cleveland, is also hoping to raise its price by 10 percent for Crestor from $3.75, the company said in a statement.
Aurobindo said it has no plans to sell the drug and has said it would make a final payment of $5.50 in April.
Pfizer, a rival to AstraZeneca, had earlier been told to lower its prices on Crestor by 10 percent. Pfizer, which makes Crestor, said it would appeal the price change.
