Objectives:Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) requires an effective long-term strategy that targets long-term management of the condition. The National Diabetes Prevention Program has a large number of programs that can be used to help patients achieve their diabetes goals. This study will compare the outcomes of patients treated with rosuvastatin, a statin that has been shown to be effective in managing T2DM and those treated with aripiprazole, a drug that has also been shown to be effective in treating T2DM. In addition, patients who are eligible for participation in this study will be eligible to participate in the study. This will enable us to compare the long-term outcomes of treatment with rosuvastatin and aripiprazole and, in addition, to determine whether rosuvastatin is an effective long-term treatment of T2DM.
Methods:This is a retrospective study of participants who were treated with rosuvastatin for ≥1 year. The study is a multicentre, double-blind, multi-center, parallel group study that included 496 patients. The study protocol, the participants were enrolled and followed from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2012. The mean age was 63.0 years (range 31-80 years). Patients were included if they had a body mass index (BMI) ≥28 kg/m2, had a body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2, or were having a diagnosis of T2DM according to the National Cholesterol Education Program guidelines. For each participant, the following baseline characteristics were collected: age, sex, duration of diabetes, BMI, duration of smoking, duration of diabetes, duration of diabetes from diagnosis to start of treatment, duration of diabetes from baseline to end of treatment. Participants also were followed from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2012, and the follow-up period is reported inTable 1.
Results:The mean age of the participants was 53.7 years (range 21-95 years). The mean BMI was 28.8 kg/m2 (range 10.0-42.0 kg/m2). The mean duration of diabetes, including the first episode of diabetes, was 3.0 years (range 1.5-6.0 years). The mean duration of smoking was 5.6 years (range 1.0-11.0 years). The mean duration of duration of diabetes from baseline to end of treatment was 3.7 years (range 0.5-5.3 years). Participants who were diagnosed with T2DM were included in the study. The mean duration of diabetes was 4.1 years (range 1.3-6.0 years). The mean duration of smoking was 5.6 years (range 1.1-11.0 years).
Conclusions:The long-term follow-up of patients treated with rosuvastatin and aripiprazole for 5 years was similar to that of those treated with aripiprazole. These findings should be considered in patients who have been diagnosed with T2DM, who were enrolled and followed in the study and who are eligible for participation in this study.
